菊名の由来

Kikuna is an area located in the Tsurumi Ward of Yokohama City, with a long-standing history. During the Edo period, Kikuna thrived as a post town on the Tokaido highway, known as "Kikuna-juku."

菊名の名前の由来にはいくつかの説があり、一つはこの地域で多くの菊が咲いていたことから来ていると言われています。また、鎌倉時代（1185年～1333年）の源頼朝の家臣である菊名三郎にちなんで名付けられたという説もあります。

There are several theories about the origin of the name Kikuna. One theory suggests it comes from the many chrysanthemums (kiku) that bloomed in the area. Another theory attributes the name to Kikuna Saburo, a retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo during the Kamakura period (1185–1333).

菊名三郎（きくな さぶろう）は、源頼朝の家臣である菊名左衛門重氏（きくな さえもん しげうじ）のことを指しているとされています。

Kikuna Saburo was a samurai during the Kamakura period and is believed to refer to Kikuna Saemon Shigeuji, a retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo.

なお、鎌倉時代の始期については、1192年の源頼朝の征夷大将軍就任（ただし、鎌倉幕府の成立とは必ずしも一致せず）や東国支配権の承認を得た1183年、守護・地頭設置権を認められた1185年とする説があります。

Regarding the beginning of the Kamakura period, there are several theories: one places it at 1192 when Minamoto no Yoritomo was appointed as shogun (though this does not necessarily coincide with the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate), another at 1183 when he gained control over the eastern provinces, and yet another at 1185 when he was granted the authority to appoint shugo (military governors) and jitō (land stewards).
